Trending Tech Brief #1: The AI Plan and Policy Changes Small Creators Should Know (Week of October 12, 2026)

This week in one paragraph: Google cut free Gemini to Flash-Lite (with Auto routing) and removed Pro from AI Plus. xAI launched a bundled “X Subscription” from $0 to $200/month. A pricing tracker reports OpenAI moved its Free and Go plans to GPT-6 with prices unchanged. Anthropic paused free perks in its Claude Startups program days after expanding it.

TPT told sellers it’s moving to an AI-free marketplace. KDP’s limit of two new titles per format each week is now fully in place. Each item ends with “So what for creators.”

When each change happened.
When each change happened.

1. Gemini’s free tier shrinks; AI Plus loses Pro

From October 9, personal Gemini accounts without a plan use Flash-Lite, and Google’s help page says “Auto” may route deeper prompts to Flash or Pro. AI Plus keeps Flash-Lite and Flash but loses Pro, on a date Google emails each subscriber (9to5Google). Google’s limits page lists 2x standard limits for Plus and 4x for Pro, with context windows of 32k, 128k and 1M tokens.

So what for creators: If you used free Gemini for long research, expect weaker results. Test before you pay. Full plan breakdown.

2. xAI launches the X Subscription

On October 12, xAI announced one plan that bundles Grok, Grok Bot, Cursor and X Premium. The tiers are Free ($0), Plus ($8), Premium ($30, described as including “the benefits of SuperGrok, Cursor Pro, and X Premium+, previously $90/month combined”), Super ($100) and Ultra ($200). xAI says existing plans continue unchanged, but older plans are closed to new sign-ups.

So what for creators: If you pay separately for an AI assistant, a coding tool and X Premium, compare the bundle against what you actually use. If you only need one of them, the bundle may not save you anything.

3. OpenAI moves Free and Go to GPT-6 (reported)

The pricing tracker PricingSaaS reported on October 8 that OpenAI’s pricing page now lists “Unlimited text chats with GPT-6” for Free and Go, with prices unchanged: Free $0, Go $8, Plus $20, Pro from $100. We haven’t confirmed the wording on OpenAI’s own page.

So what for creators: If it holds, free-tier quality just went up. Check whether your paid plan is still worth it for your workload.

4. Anthropic pauses Claude Startups perks

Several outlets, including Yahoo Tech, reported that Anthropic paused its free year of Claude Team and $1,000 in API credits a few days after expanding the program on October 6, following a surge of applications. Unclaimed offers are being re-reviewed. Anthropic’s program page is the place to check current status.

So what for creators: Don’t build plans around promotional AI credits. They can disappear quickly.

5. TPT: an “AI-free” marketplace, plus Exclusive Seller

At its October 8 town hall, TPT said sellers shouldn’t use generative AI in resources or listings. The written policy is still pending. Separately, its Exclusive Seller membership (77.5% payout, $59.95/year, TPT-only sales) replaces Premium on January 1, 2027.

So what for creators: Start with your covers and descriptions, and decide on Exclusive by December 31. What we know so far.

6. KDP: two new titles per format, per week

KDP’s Create a Book page now lists separate weekly limits for creating and for submitting: “Up to 2” new titles per format each, resetting Sunday at 12:00 AM UTC.

So what for creators: Plan series launches with this limit in mind. KDP 2026 guide.

Also noted

  • Google released the Nano Banana 2.1 image model. TNW reports an API price of $0.0336 per 1K image (we haven’t checked Google’s own price list).
  • AI video platforms announced creator marketplaces this month, including Medeo (press release, October 13). These are company claims only so far.
