Selling AI-Assisted Digital Downloads on Etsy in 2026: Disclosure, “Designed by,” and the Prompt-Bundle Ban

The short answer: Yes. Etsy allows digital downloads made with AI tools when they come from your own prompts or inputs.

You must say in the listing description that AI was used, and you can’t sell AI prompt bundles on their own. On a $5 download, a US seller keeps about $4.08 after Etsy’s standard fees, before income tax and any optional ad fees.

What Etsy’s rules actually say

Etsy’s Seller Handbook article on AI says Etsy will “continue to allow sellers to use their original prompts in combination with AI tools to create the artwork they sell.” Its examples include a fantasy scene made from a seller’s prompt and a custom AI portrait of a buyer’s pet. The same article says: “Sellers must disclose within their listing description if an item is created with the use of AI.”

The Help Center page “What Can I Sell on Etsy?” places these items in the category of things you design yourself: “This category also includes seller-prompted AI creations,” and “Seller-prompted AI creations must disclose the use of AI.” It also says digital items “must be made and/or designed by you, the seller.”

The prompt-bundle ban

The Handbook is clear on this one: “we prohibit the sale of AI prompt bundles on our platform.” Etsy’s reasoning is that prompts are part of the creative process “and should not be sold separately from the final artwork.” So a prompt pack isn’t an Etsy product, though it may be allowed on other platforms (see our disclosure comparison).

What disclosure looks like in practice

Etsy asks for the disclosure in the listing description. It doesn’t prescribe exact wording, so plain and specific works best. For example:

  • “Illustrations created with AI image tools from my own prompts, then arranged and edited by me.”
  • “Planner layout designed by me; cover artwork generated with AI and edited by me.”

Put the line where buyers will see it, not buried at the end. Some third-party guides describe large waves of enforcement with specific numbers. We couldn’t confirm those figures from Etsy, so we haven’t repeated them here.

Disclosure doesn’t fix IP problems

Disclosing AI use doesn’t make infringing content acceptable. The Handbook separately prohibits content that “infringes on the privacy, publicity, and personal rights of others.” Art that imitates a brand, character or living artist’s signature work is risky whether or not you used AI.

Etsy’s fees on a digital download (US sellers)

From Etsy’s Fees & Payments Policy and payment processing page:

FeeAmount (US)
Listing fee$0.20 per listing; listings expire after four months and renew at $0.20
Transaction fee6.5% of the displayed price (plus any shipping or gift wrap)
Payment processing (Etsy Payments)3% + $0.25 per order, for a US bank account
Also possibleOffsite Ads, regulatory operating fees, 2.5% currency conversion. Varies; not included below.

Here are the numbers for one sale of a single listing, with no tax, no ads and no currency conversion:

PriceListingTransactionProcessingYou keep
$3.00$0.20$0.20$0.34$2.27
$5.00$0.20$0.33$0.40$4.07
$10.00$0.20$0.65$0.55$8.60
$20.00$0.20$1.30$0.85$17.65

Rounded per line, so totals may differ by a cent. Etsy charges payment processing on the total sale including sales tax, so real figures can differ slightly. Low prices lose a larger share to the fixed $0.20 and $0.25 fees.

An honest listing workflow

  1. Create the product with real input from you: your idea, layout, editing and selection.
  2. Check rights and accuracy. Make sure your fonts, clip art and any source material are licensed for commercial use.
  3. Write the description yourself. Say what the buyer gets, the file formats and the page count.
  4. Add the AI disclosure near the top of the description.
  5. Use accurate previews that show the actual files.
  6. Keep records of how each product was made, in case questions come up.

Etsy, or somewhere else?

Etsy gives you a marketplace audience, but you pay listing and transaction fees for it. Gumroad has no listing fee but brings you less built-in traffic.

TPT is moving toward an AI-free marketplace (what we know so far), so AI-assisted teaching resources may suit Etsy or your own store better. Compare what you keep on each platform in our fee comparison.

The price-point problem

Because Etsy charges $0.45 in fixed fees per sale ($0.20 listing + $0.25 processing), cheap downloads give up a large share. On a $3 download you keep $2.27, or 76% of the price.

On a $20 download you keep $17.65, or 88%. Bundling related printables at one higher price spreads those fixed fees across more product, if your buyers actually want the bundle.

Common mistakes

  • Burying the disclosure at the end of a long description.
  • Listing a prompt pack as the product. Etsy’s Handbook prohibits it.
  • Using AI art “in the style of” a living artist or a brand character. Disclosure doesn’t fix IP problems.
  • Mockups that don’t match the file, such as showing a framed print when the buyer gets a PDF with different proportions.
  • Not counting renewals. Listings expire after four months and renew at $0.20.
  • Relying on enforcement statistics from blogs. We couldn’t confirm the ones that circulate.

Pre-listing checklist

  1. I designed or directed the item myself, and I can describe my role.
  2. Every font, clip art element and texture is licensed for commercial use.
  3. The description says plainly that AI was used, near the top.
  4. The previews show the actual files the buyer will receive.
  5. The file formats, sizes and page count are listed.
  6. No brand names, characters or living artists’ styles are imitated.
  7. I’ve checked the price against the fixed fees.

FAQ

Do I have to disclose AI on Etsy?

Yes. Etsy’s Seller Handbook says sellers “must disclose within their listing description if an item is created with the use of AI.”

Can I sell AI prompts on Etsy?

Not on their own. Etsy says it prohibits “the sale of AI prompt bundles,” because prompts shouldn’t be sold separately from the finished artwork.

How much does Etsy take from a $5 digital download?

For a US seller: $0.20 listing, $0.33 transaction (6.5%) and $0.40 processing (3% + $0.25). That leaves about $4.08 before tax and any ad fees.

Is AI art allowed on Etsy in 2026?

Yes, if it’s based on the seller’s own prompts or inputs, is disclosed, and follows Etsy’s other rules, including the intellectual-property rules.

The bottom line

Etsy is one of the more AI-tolerant marketplaces, but only if you’re the creator, you disclose, and you don’t sell prompts on their own. Price above the point where the fixed fees eat most of the sale, and re-check Etsy’s policy pages before each new product line.
